Listening: 7 Ways To Improve Your Skills to Improve Life
By: Megan Newman
Ah, listening. It’s one of those things that is so much easier said than done. We live in a society where we want our voice to be heard and we want it to be heard now. That instant gratification of being heard is satisfied by social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Don’t get me wrong, being heard is wonderful and very valuable. We all have a very important message to get out into this world, but listening is as equally important.
Listening and hearing are two very different things. Hearing refers to the sounds that you hear and listening refers to the focus, attention, and understanding that you give to the other person speaking.
Below are seven quick points. If you take the time to evaluate each point by using the 3 bullet questions below you will find that it will transform your life. Use the 1-10 scale for each bullet.
- How often do you do this when communicating?
- How much will this point improve your life?
- How willing are you to start incorporating this?
I purposely did not elaborate on the points because I want you to take the time to think about what each one means to you and work it into your relationships.
- Remove distractions.
- Set aside time.
- Ask probing/encouraging questions
- Listen to understand and not to respond
- Be mindful of body language
- Don’t assume
Although these points may be short and concise, do not be mislead, these are very important. Think and meditate on each one.
Do you incorporate it into your daily life? If not how can you? Share with me below in the comments section one or two that you already do on a daily basis and one or two that you would like to start doing on a regular basis. Conversation and communication is what will inspire you to do more and be more, so don’t be shy!
